Andy Harvey
Director
Andy Harvey has been director of the Academy of Gymnastics since 1985. He has been pursuing the art of gymnastics since 1975 when he began teaching while competing at Central Connecticut State College under Tony Capitao.
Andy has taught in Connecticut, Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, Michigan and Saudi Arabia. He studied under such notables as Muriel Grossfeld and Vannie Edwards. He has received a Professional Development Accreditation and Safety Certification with USA Gymnastics.
Andy spent three years as assistant coach at the University of Connecticut. During this time, the team took sixth place honors at the 1983 NCAA National Championships in California. Two of the gymnasts also received All-American honors. Andy was named 2016 American Athletic Union Coach of the Year.
A past member of the Educational Kinesiology Foundation and Brain Gym consultant, Andy is excited to incorporate these skills into his classes to enhance your child’s learning experience through the science of movement.
Observation Policy
Due to safety considerations and control of class organization, we have adopted a no “in-gym” observation policy. Full gym viewing is available via the second floor observation area.
Proper Attire
GIRLS must wear leotards or fitted outfits (gym shorts, T-shirts, and warm-ups are optional over gym wear.) Tights may be worn if they are footless.
BOYS should wear gym shorts and T-shirts. (Drawstring or elastic waist band. No buttons, buckles or zippers.)
We ask that students do not wear belts, jewelry or earrings. Long hair must be secured before class begins – preferably in a braid. No bobby pins.
Snow Days
If weather conditions require the Academy to close, a recorded cancellation announcement will be placed on the answering machine one hour prior to class. In addition, the cancellation will be posted on this page, as well as our Facebook page. Notification will also be made to local broadcast outlets.
Holidays
The gym will be closed October 31, November 26-30, December 24 – January 4 and May 25.
Make Up Policy
Make-up class is held on the 1st Friday of the month. 5:00 – 5:50 for all ages. If your child has missed a class, feel free to attend. No pre-registration is necessary.
Rules of the gym
• No shoes or sneakers allowed in the gym. No Jewelry. No gum.
• NO SMOKING on Academy grounds.
• Long hair must be tied back (preferably in a braid).
• Young students should be prompted to use the lavatory before class.
• Enter parking lot on right side of building. No drop off or pick up on the street.
• Watch for children in parking lot. No children climbing on porch ledge or railings.
• Please enjoy the observation area. For safety reasons, no observers are allowed on the gym floor.
